Lil Runner Enters Kindergarten

Welp, it was bound to happen, and it finally did. The boy started kindergarten today.

He'll grow into his backback eventually.

If you follow this blog, then you may know that this kid loves his sports. I even enter him in races whenever I get the chance. Like that time at Disney when he won his heat!

He's a natural.

Anyway, he asked to have a “boy’s day” over the weekend. I had a ton to do around the house, but gladly put it aside to hang with the lil man. I just had to wake up extra early to get my run in first! 9+ sweaty miles.

After that I showered and we went to watch the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie. Luckily I had some free passes when I won my age group at a recent 5k…score! He really enjoyed the flick!

Then we went to the sporting goods store to get him some soccer shoes. But we got a little distracted with all the toys there…

And we ran into this guy…

We added a new rubber friend to our tough guy crew.

We also grabbed a bite at one of our fave tex mex joints. And went to the park so he could play on the playground. By the time we got home, I was exhausted.

I was hoping to lay on the couch for a while, and so I asked the boy if he wanted to play a game on the computer (thinking that might distract him), but he said, “No. I’d rather hang out with you. It’s boy’s day after-all.”

I couldn’t resist that. I sucked it up and played “battle” with him until it was time to settle down to a movie of his choice.

The night before his first day of school, I also got a chance to relax with him on the patio in the same way we did 5 years ago…

He's grown about 5 times his size. Based on that growth rate, I figure he'll be about 80 feet tall by his 20's.

Which brings us to this morning. The lil one was offer to lower education.

We'll see if he's still smiling in a few months.

Before we left I gave him a hung and some last minute advice…

Just like the ending of 'Lost in Translation'.

Like they say, time really does go fast.  So crazy.

How bout you? Facebook feed overrun with first day of school pics? Want to join our tough guy crew? Anyone else see TMNT?

Dopey Challenge Training Big Weekend Day 1

The upcoming Disney Dopey Challenge (5k, 10k, 13.1, 26.2) will be four fun days of racing. For my training, today was supposed to be 2.5 miles of running to represent the 5k.  I accidentally on purpose went 3.  Didn’t see the harm.

I also went to the gym for an hour of strength training.  I had thought about skipping it to rest as much as possible for the coming 3 days of miles and miles.  But I did not skip, and here’s why.

He's leading the pack! I'm right behind him.

He’s leading the pack! I’m right behind him.

Like I said, the race I was supposed to be “simulating” today is the 5k.  But what happens after that race is what I also want to be prepared for.  The boy has the Disney Kid’s race.  It’s only a 200 on the track, but I will most likely have to run it with him.  Add that to the walking we’ll also have to do that day getting to the track and such, I figured I might as well do some extra workout to prepare for it.

I can't believe he has better form than I do. He also has better race photos.

Last year Grif won his heat!  Hopefully he can repeat this year, but he’s running with bigger kids this time.

Showing off his medal. He's as serious around a camera as his pops is.

So that’s why I did some extra running/working out today.  I know I’ll need it for the Kid’s race!  BTW, after the race last year, I had to chase him about another qtr mile down the road.  When I finally caught him, I asked why he was running.  He said he was getting ready for his next race.  Yes!  Get em hooked while they’re young!

How bout you?  Ever do a little extra workout than the plan calls for?  Ever been to a kid’s race?

Please Vote & Weekday Workout Recap

CLICK THIS SENTENCE TO VOTE FOR MY GRIFFIN!!!

Here’s my explanation of the above link:  I love Brooks exercise products.  I have so much gear that sometimes looks like Brooks threw up on me.  Mainly, I’m about the shoes.  When I switched to Pure Flows a couple years ago, I haven’t had a running injury since.  I’m not saying the shoes are the main reason, they aren’t, but for me they seem to be the right fit (pun intended).  In fact, one day I was given a pair of free shoes of another brand, I wore them for one run and my calf hurt for weeks after.  So I’m sticking with them until something changes.

That said, Brooks is having a contest.  They want to see your #RunHappy moment.  I submitted a picture of our toddler running a race at Disney World this past year (he won the race).  Can’t help but smile when looking at that photo.  He’s running so free and happy!  Here’s the photo:

I HATE those contests that try to get  you to try and get all your facebook friends and twitter followers to vote for you in order to win.  You have close to zero chance of winning them.  That said, that is only part of this contest – They are taking into consideration the votes, but then their judges are deciding the winners.  So your vote could help some.  You vote by either Facebook liking or Tweeting this pic from their page.  You have until midnight tonight.

The prize I’m interested in is the GoPro camera.  They are great.  And since I’m a TV producer, I could use one.  And since I’m a runner, I could bring it along during races or mud runs too!  So click that link above if you see this by midnight Aug 29, 2013.  Thanks in advance.

Anyway, another weekday set of workouts is finally done!  It went like this:  Tues, 3 mile run + weights.  Wed, 4 mile run with hill repeats.  Thurs 3 mile run + weights.  Tomorrow is rest day, then the weekend back to back of 3 and 12 miles.  I’m probably going to yoga as well.  Then a MUCH needed Labor Day holiday!  It’ll be nice to have a day off to try and get caught up on life stuff.  Family BBQ is on Sunday, but other than that haven’t made plans yet.

What are y’all doing?

P.S. If anyone from Brooks sees this and can help get me some kind of sponsorship, I would appreciate you for life!

runDisney Kids Races (Part 1) #WDWMarathon

So as part of the Disney Marathon Weekend, they also had something for the kiddos.  And why wouldn’t they?  It’s Disney after all!  It’s also a small world after all (Now try getting that song out of your head!).

They had a few options depending on their age, and for our toddler Griffin, he was in the 100 yard dash.  I think we could’ve signed him up for the mile, but stuck with the shorter distance this time (he has done a 1 mile fun run before).  He ran the same race last year too, so we knew a little better what to expect…and it went well!

I can't believe he has better form than I do. He also has better race photos.

The race takes place at their Wide World of Sports complex on their really nice track.  And being Disney, they go all out with a DJ spinnin tunage, a couple hosts/commentators, t-shirts, finishers medals, food and drink, personalized bibs, and even Mickey himself!  You can’t beat the price either – $10 entry fee!!!

You even get to get their goody bags at the race expo.  I think the kids really liked the race and the whole experience made them feel like real runners (which they are!).

And they're off! Most of them anyway.

And they’re off! Most of them anyway.

Griffin actually warmed up for about 20 minutes before the race.  He also wanted “energy” in the form of my mom’s Power Bar Gel Blasts.  Speaking of energy, Griffin told me before the race that he would leave some of his on the track for me to use during my marathon.  I remembered that around mile 18 when we ran on the exact same track!  Definitely helped me to keep moving.  He was sure to remind me before the race to pick up some of the energy he left, and I did!

He's leading the pack! I'm taking a shaky movie of it.

All the warming up and “energy” must’ve worked because Griffin won his race!  To be fair, he was only in one of three heats on our day and there were three days of kids races.  But still, he crushed it!  Nobody else was even close to him at the finish.

Breaking away from the pack. Note how I'm not even in the picture anymore.

I don't think his feet ever touched the track.

My only instructions to him before the race were to run right down the middle of his lane and don’t stop till he gets to Mickey, who was at the finish line.  He did and did.  He was pleased with himself that he “beat all the other kids”.  But we had to have a good sport talk after we passed a girl who was crying cause she didn’t win and Grif told her, “I did.”
Hard to blame him though, he did really well and earned his second race medal!

Funny thing is that after the race, he just kept running.  I didn’t want to chase him as I was conserving “energy” for my marathon, but at one point he had run almost a mile away from us.  I finally caught up to him and asked why he kept running.  He responded that he’s, “getting ready for my next race.”  Haha, good for him!

In part 2 of my review of the runDisney Kids Races, I’ll post the videos – wait until you see them!!!  They’re amazing, trust me!  So stay tuned!

In the meantime, I need to study Griffin’s photos to learn myself how to have better running form!  Peace out Internet!
