Welp, we’ve dun it. Anuther trip around the sun. Looking back, 2014 was a pretty decent year. Let’s take a peek at a few hightlights, shall we?

It kicked off with a BANG! In January I ran the Disney World Dopey & Goofy Challenge. That’s 4 straight days, 4 straight races.

Shortly afterwards though, I was going for a run, tripped, felled, and Nancy Kerriganed my own knee.

I was able to eventually get active again by doing a lot of yoga in a retail store.

I really think yoga is important for everyone – including runners. So I do a lot of it. And besides…

Eventually my knee felt better and I got back on the roads with some of my fave people. Like Thursday Night Social Runners.

To help fuel my workouts, I ate lots of tacos. Lots.

In between training, I also got to see some of my fave bands…like at this FREE concert – The Killers!

Then came the Fall. Autumn is always a time of change. For us, a big change was the boy starting kindergarten. Where does the time go???

He's grown about 5 times his size. Based on that growth rate, I figure he'll be about 80 feet tall by his 20's.

But in happier times, I set another PR at the North Texas Turkey Trot 5k 20:04. Bummer was the course being .1 miles short.

Next up was the Rudolph Run 5k. And yet another PR – officially 21:29, but my watch had the course being long. According to it I came across at 20:50-something. Either way, I got 2nd in my age group!

Last year's race was cancelled due to ice. So I got two medals!

And as part of the Dallas Marathon festivities, I got to meet MEB!!!!!!

The end of the year was spent with friends and family for the holidays.

Looking back, it was a pretty good year. Lots of tacos, shows, good times, and running. In fact, I went over 1,200 miles on my feet. I even surpassed 5,000 miles total with my Nike+ watch – starting when I got it a few years ago.

5 g's over the past few years.

Here’s hoping 2015 will be even better! Happy New Year, y’all!

Today’s only question: What’s your top 2014 highlight?

Halloween Fun & 10 Mile Run!

Yay, Halloween! I wrote the other day about the costumed social run I went on. Good times. But on the official Halloween, it was time for some trick or treating with the fams and friends. It went something like this:

Enforcing the law, lollipop in tow.

Enforcing the law, lollipop in tow.

A good ninja is never seen...except when there's candy involved.

A good ninja is never seen…except when there’s candy involved.

Here in Texas, we haven’t had Autumn yet, so it was a bit sweaty on Halloween. It’s been in the 90’s still during the days. That all changed on Friday night though when a cold front came through. I woke up early for my usual long run and saw the temps in the mid-30’s!!! No thanks! I went back to bed. It was probably the first run I didn’t go on in 6 months. And call me a halloweenie if you must, but I need time to adjust – I can’t just jump into a 60 degree temp change!

Not to worry, it had warmed back up a little on Sunday, so I went for a 10 miler followed by some tough yoga.

IMG_2411

I was also race stalking all my friends over the weekend at the NYC Marathon and locally at the Dallas Running Club Half Marathon. Congrats to all!

In between checking split updates, I also cleaned house. And found this gem in amongst the kids Halloween candy.

Times are tough in the suburbs apparently.

Times are tough in the suburbs apparently.

Ha, ok then.

How bout you? Did you race this weekend? Did you go trick or treating? What was your costume? Are you ready to get off the rock?

Halloween Social Run

Each Halloween the Thursday Night Social Run club meets for a costume run. We run around a popular dining area and throw candy to people eating on the patios. My friends asked if I would join them as 1970’s runners. I agreed.

Generic Title: Year in Review

Last day of 2013.  I got one last run and weight session in.  It gave me time to think about the past year.  Here’s what had happened…

October Run Mileage & Halloween Recap

As I get closer to the Disney Dopey Challenge (4 straight days of races: 5k, 10k, 13.1, 26.2), my training mileage is obviously increasing week by week and month by month.  I decided to look back at the past few months and see what I’ve been hitting.  It goes a little something like this:

August – 93 miles

September – 111 miles

October – 130 miles

Looks like the Hal Higdon plan I’m following increases about 20 miles per month.  I don’t want to look ahead and do the math to see if that will hold true, I’m just going to keep following it and trust that it will all work out.

That said, I think 130 miles in a month is a pretty good number.  I’m happy to have reached that.  But I know enough not to get all cocky about it.  Here’s why:  I have friends who do 100 mile races in a DAY.  I have friends who run up to 120 in a WEEK.  And the list goes on.  So there is always someone doing more, and there are always opportunities to do more.  I also have friends who run just a handful of miles a month, it’s all good as long as they’re out there!

Anyway, on to November and many more miles!

As for All Hallows Eve, it went well. The girl wanted to be a cowgirl (we’re assuming this since she can’t really talk, but she is obsessed with her pink cowgirl boots).

Cowgirls are udderly cute.

Cowgirls are udderly cute.

My boy wanted to be a ninja.  I’m guessing he wanted to be that because he has two imaginary friends who protect our house from a tree in the front yard.  They are named Go and Johnny Go.  They are ninjas.  famous illustrator David Hyde Costello, who graciously offered to sketch them for him.  Here’s what he drew:

Grif said the only inaccurate part is that one of them has a bow and arrow, not a sword. Shoulda known!

Grif said the only inaccurate part is that one of them has a bow and arrow, not a sword. Shoulda known!

I must go back and say that I can only ASSUME they are imaginary friends, because as my one friend pointed out, if they’re true ninjas, then they cannot be seen!  Here’s Griffin in his costume:

Do not cross him.

Do not cross him unless you want to taste steel (or plastic, as it were).

And it just so happens that I have access to a ninja outfit as well.  So I told him I’d dress up with him, but I don’t do normal costumes, it has to have a twist.  I decided on adding a red wig and going as a Ginja (ginger ninja).

I'm a ninja with attitude.

I’m a ginja with attitude.

So there you have it, another month of run training down, and another successful Halloween!

What about you?  How’s your mileage looking?  What’s you dress up as for Halloween?  Do you have any imaginary friends?

Halloween Run and Costumes

I’ve mentioned it before, but I love Thursdays.  It means I’ve finished another work week’s worth of workouts (yea, rest day tomorrow!).  Today I was up early to run 4 miles, then a weight session this afternoon.  Is anyone else running in the early morn or the evenings freaked out a little this time of year?  I run the same streets as the rest of the year, but with all the spooky decorations in the yards, I end up doing quite a few double takes.  Luckily though, all the skeletons, zombies, and ghouls turned out to be fake and not real.

This Thursday happens to be my favorite holiday – Halloween!  I love the challenge of coming up with a creative costume.  This year though, I haven’t had a lot of time or brain effort to come up with a good one.  We’ll see what happens tonight though.  I’m sure I’ll recap tomorrow.

But for now, I picked a few of my favorites from over the years and thought I’d share…

So there you go.  Some more creative than others.  My fave is the McConaughey one – it looks simple, but it took a TON of work to put it together.  It paid off though, I won two costume contests that year!

What about you?  What are you going to be this year?  What was your all time fave costume?  Curious – Which of mine do you like the best?
