Run – Keepin it 200, Dogz Treatz & Super Moon Powers! #OwnChicago

Guys, you guys! Hey guys! I’m back. In so many ways, I’m back! Back to the poor lonely blog. Back to my ole runnin self. Back to life. Back to reality. Wait…I think I devolved into a Soul II Soul song there for a second…but I digest.

September is over and it saw my legs carry me 200 miles!!!

192 + 8 = 200 according to math and Nike+

192 + 8 = 200 according to math and Nike+

Chicago Marathon training is winding down and I’m feeling grrrrrreat! Oh wait, I just got why Tony the Tiger says that – so he can grrrrrrrrowl when he does. Huh, learn something new every day…but I divest.

Run. Sun. Shoes. Tacos. Life.

Run. Sun. Shoes. Tacos. Life.

The Texas weather is still hawt as all get out during the sun times, but during the before sun times it is actually kewl out! The humidity/dew point finally broke. It’s no longer oppressively oppressing. I can actually sweat and have it evaporate and cool my bod. Ya know, like it’s sposed to.

It’s made a world of difference in my runs. I have pep in my step. I’ve missed pep this summer.

That bull was so horny.

Mess with the bull statue, get the statue horns.

I had zero confidence two weeks ago. Now I have all the confidence. So many hot sweaty muggy slow long runs finally replaced with cooler damp fun faster jaunts. I didn’t even mind the final track workout.

The numbers and letters say it all.

The numbers and letters say it all..or write it all, as it were.

I’m feelin fine. My month long cough seems to be gone. My aches don’t ache so much. And I’m really enjoying the sunrise runs.

Which way do you want to go?

Which way do you want to go?

Keep it coming, Skyler.

Keep it coming, Skyler.

You don’t see many people out and about as early as I’m running, but you occasionally see some regulars in the parks. I’ve gotten to know a few folks, and a few dog folks too.

We've been good. We can haz treatz?

We’ve been good. We can haz treatz?

And this has to be a good sign – I even got to run under the #SuperBloodMoon too!

#nofilter

#nofilter #ILoveMyMoon

Anywhoodle guys, I got some more blog catching up to do. But I’ll save it for next time, which should be maybe…tomorrow? Yay, I’m back!

How bout you? Feelin any Fall? Who’s ready to #OwnChicago??? Does the blood moon give any special powers?

-Scott

PS – To all my blogger friends – I’m sorry I’m so behind. I’m reading your comments and I’m going to reply to all of them! I can’t wait to catch up with your happenings too!!! Working on it, kids!

Running Dawgs, Party Animal & Humid Tacos!

Sup beaches? Sorry I’ve been blog radio silent, but it’s been a crazy couple weeks with school starting, marathon training, work working, soccer coaching, etc. etc. etc.

In the words of Inigo Montoya, “Let me ‘splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up…………with Instagram pics1″

Last week’s runs were ‘zing! We had a little “not 1 million degrees” front come through. It was a JOY to get a break from the humidity.

A dude, A dog, A runbud, A world record holder.

A dude, A dog, A runbud, A 100 mile world record holder.

Speak for your self, Sign.

Speak for your self, Sign.

These fake flowers smell BEEutiful.

These fake flowers are BEEutiful.

Buuut then the heat and humidity came back. Ah well, it was nice to have a little break to get some of the confidence back. The oppressive heat has been slowing me down, so it was nice to know I’ve still got it in me – just need cooler temps to unleash the beast!

Humid again, but hey, free tacos!!

Humid again, but hey, free tacos!!

I do got some aches and pains and tiredness, but can’t complain too much. That would be bogus. Closing in on 400 miles in this training plan, and feelin fine!

No animals? Not even party ones?

No animals….Not even party ones?!?

In the end, all that matters is that you have fun with it! And I’ve been having a blast with this training! I’ve hit every single planned mile and have got to run with some GREAT people.

In the words of Crawl, "Puffy cheeks."

In the words of Crawl, “Puffy cheeks.”

Right now we’re in the middle of our highest mileage week yet: 5, 12, 8, 5, 5, 20 = 55 totes. Stuff just got real. But we got this thang! Let’s do this, legs!

How bout you? Catch my two movie references? Did I miss any caption opportunities? Do you have any questions?

Marathon “Train”ing, Chasing Waterfalls & Helping Chicks

Playa playa, what it is? Been another crazy week! So busy! I still have…not one…not five…but TWO race recaps I need to blog. Hopefully next week!

For now, let’s just look at some pictures of some of my Chicago Marathon training from some of this week, shan’t we?

Doggone it's hawt in hurrah!

Doggone it’s hawt in hurrah!

That's not a real waterfall, that's just my actual sweat dripping down the stairs.

That’s not a real waterfall, that’s just my actual sweat dripping down the stairs.

I choo-choo-choose to have some fun in my marathon train-ing.

I choo-choo-choose to have some fun in my marathon “train”ing.

To my chagrin, she wasn't pumping water, she was churning butter.

To my chagrin, she wasn’t pumping water, she was churning butter.

Oh hey, look, I even have some moving pictures from the morning of those last two pics…

Here we are just over halfway through the month and I’ve already run almost 90 miles! Woot woot! So the training is so good so far.

***Bonus Alert***I have one extra pic.***End Alert***

It comes to us from the FIRST RACE I attended last weekend. I love this pic…

So much going on here.

So much going on here.

Here’s what had happened: You see us all laughing in the background? Well that’s cuz that gal had just passed chicked that guy and we yelled at her to keep it up all the way to the finish line (about 50 yards away). Then our buddy Josh (in orange) yelled at the guy to not let her beat him. The guy paused for a second, weighed his options, then started yelling out profanities before taking off on a dead sprint! It cracked us up.

***Spoiler Alert*** He didn’t catch her.***End Alert***

More miles and hopefully more dope pictures this weekend! I’ll share on Monday (& hopefully have those other two race recaps too!).

How bout you? Climb any statues lately? Ever curse during a race? Did I miss any other caption puns?

Play on playas!

Running in “Da Hood”, Becoming Fashion/Yoga Expert & Free Lululemon Gear!!!

I’ve been cray cray bizzay. Let’s catch up, shall we?

Chicago Marathon training has kicked in and I’m pretty excited about it. For this, I’m going to continue to do my long runs whenever I can with WRRC. Solid folks.

hhh

Last week’s subtle group.

It’s summer now, and that means they do a lil’ thang called “Run My Hood”. Basically, each week we meet at the house of a different runner and run their favorite neighborhood course. It’s pretty cool. I’ve often thought on my own neighborhood runs how I’d like to show other people “my route”.

Anyway, the best part of the run is the after-run. Hey hey, pool part-ay today-hey!

Lounge.

Lounge.

Chill.

Chill.

Fresh.

Fresh.  BTW, Snapchat – @piratebobcat – hit me up, fool!

As always, I like to incorporate cross training into my…well, uh, training. The trails are all flooded in North Texas, so that’s a no-go. But it can’t rain in yoga class (well, except maybe rain sweat).

My elf friend and I finally mastered "Partner Chair Pose".

My elf friend and I finally mastered “Partner Chair Pose”.

And I gots to give a big shout out to Lululemon. At yoga practice the other day, the employees called me up to the front. They said they wanted to thank me for being a regular yogi, “Go pick out any yoga mat…it’s yours!” I was so surprised and honored…and PUMPED!

The mat my foot finally chose.

The mat my foot finally chose.

It was so cool of them to do that. And I gotta say, this mat is like night and day compared to my old one…or is it like day and night, IDK. What I do know is the quality of this mat is top notch. No slipping when I sweat, good padding, solid construction – just incredible.

And bonus, my looooooong time friend (you can see her in a couple group run pics above) has been at these yoga seshes because the studio she goes to and teaches at is putting on the classes!

Meet Virginia. She never compromises. Loves babies and surprises. Wears high heels when she exercises. Ain't it beautiful?

Meet Virginia. She never compromises. Loves babies and surprises. Wears high heels when she exercises. Ain’t it beautiful?

Other than that it’s been sweaty doggy walks. And seeing as I’m an fashion expert, I made a quick tutorial on how to look good as you walk the hound.

Of course there’s lots of other stuff goings on, but I’ll save it for the next post…I don’t want to tire your pretty little heads too much today. Have a great weekend, hombres y mujeres!

How bout you? Ever get to run someone else’s “hood”? Ever been rewarded by a business you regular (other than the corner pub)? Ever Meet Virginia?

-Scott

PS – Best of luck to everyone running Grandma Marathon this weekend! I have a few Dallas friends there – Look for them – They’ll probably be in tops with “WRRC” on the front and “Run Free” on the back. Slap em on the backside for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Spring & Egg Hunt Run!

Don't call me French Scott...call me Freedom Scott.

Don’t call me French Scott…call me Freedom Scott. Our dog is so Che in this pic.

So yes, when I turned over the April page of our #flalendar (Flula + Calendar), I saw an opportunity to do a recreation. Such is life.

Ha, anyway, it’s Sprung around North Texas. That means high winds & humidity, warmer weather, and occasional storms. It’s made my runs interesting. I’m not quite acclimatized yet. Buuut it does feel good to get some sun on our skin.

Catchin some rays.

Even though it was windy and warm, I still had fun running with friends this week at an unofficial egg hunt run.

First we ran.

Here we come, into the Gale force winds!

And then we looked for eggs.

I don't know who had more fun - kids or non-kids.

I don’t know who had more fun – kids or non-kids (the eggs had prizes inside for all ages)

After the fun was dun, it was time for more fun. We went down the street for some nibbles and bevvies (see, I’m so European).

Throwin shade...because we're young and hip.

And since my French Freedom look went over so well, I decided to keep it going.

Good times for all! I’ve got some more fun runs planned for the weekend. Onward and upward, kids!

How bout you? Springing yet? Any Easter runs planned? Any ideas for more fun photos you want to see?

Welp, we’ve dun it. Anuther trip around the sun. Looking back, 2014 was a pretty decent year. Let’s take a peek at a few hightlights, shall we?

It kicked off with a BANG! In January I ran the Disney World Dopey & Goofy Challenge. That’s 4 straight days, 4 straight races.

I was able to eventually get active again by doing a lot of yoga in a retail store.

To help fuel my workouts, I ate lots of tacos. Lots.

In between training, I also got to see some of my fave bands…like at this FREE concert – The Killers!

Then came the Fall. Autumn is always a time of change. For us, a big change was the boy starting kindergarten. Where does the time go???

But in happier times, I set another PR at the North Texas Turkey Trot 5k 20:04. Bummer was the course being .1 miles short.

Next up was the Rudolph Run 5k. And yet another PR – officially 21:29, but my watch had the course being long. According to it I came across at 20:50-something. Either way, I got 2nd in my age group!

Last year's race was cancelled due to ice. So I got two medals!

The end of the year was spent with friends and family for the holidays.

Batman PJ's mean it's finally almost bed time.

Winding down on Christmas.

Looking back, it was a pretty good year. Lots of tacos, shows, good times, and running. In fact, I went over 1,200 miles on my feet. I even surpassed 5,000 miles total with my Nike+ watch – starting when I got it a few years ago.

5 g's over the past few years.

5 g’s over the past few years.

Here’s hoping 2015 will be even better! Happy New Year, y’all!

Today’s only question: What’s your top 2014 highlight?

Losing the Best (Running) Friend

Sweet Bailey Girl.

Sweet Bailey Girl.

We adopted Bailey from a local shelter 10 or 11 years ago. She was just a puppy. A stray they had found on the street. We’ll never know where she came from, but we’re glad she ended up with us.

Sadly, she just entered the big dog park in the sky.

Bailey & Guinness - the Irish Car Dogs.

Bailey & Guinness. Best buds.

When she was younger, I’d take her on my runs. Her short stubby legs trying to keep up. As she got older, it seemed her hips bothered her some, so she stopped joining my runs, but still loved our walks!

I think this is the last photo taken of her (too bad I cheesed it up). It was on a recent walk. Her grey muzzle in full effect.

I think this is the last photo taken of her (we were both panting). It was on a walk a month or two ago. Her grey muzzle in full effect.

She loved people. Even at the dog park, she couldn’t care less about the other pups, all she wanted to do was find humans to pet her. If anyone ever sat down anywhere (home or away), she’d put her chin on their lap, encouraging you to scratch behind her ears.

A few years (and lbs) ago. Her chin was forever on people's legs, just wanted to be petted.

A few years ago. Her chin was forever on people’s legs, just wanted to be petted.

She was also a great sport. In fact, I used her in several short films I made. If you have a few minutes and want to watch them, then here are the links:

Once Upon a Time in Dogtown (Grand Prize Winner at PetFlix Film Festival 2007)

Have a Knife Day (Best Short Tail Winner at PetFlix Film Festival 2008)

My New Best Friend (Official Selection at PetFlix Film Festival 2009)

She liked pirates as much as me.

She liked pirates as much as me.

A few months back she began having seizures. They were short at first – a minute or two, but gradually got longer. The internet and the veterinarian both said it can happen to older dogs. Could be a brain tumor. But as long as she was happy, then it was ok for now. She was happy.

She had the most soulful eyes.

She had the most soulful eyes.

Around 5am the day before Thanksgiving, I heard some noises coming from the living room. I went to investigate and it was Bailey having another seizure. There’s not much you can do, except move stuff out of the way so she doesn’t hurt herself. Other than that, just comfort her. So we comforted her…for nearly an hour. By far the longest episode. By far.

When we first got her. She was so tiny.

When we first got her. She was so tiny.

Finally it slowed down, but she wasn’t snapping out of it like previous times. I knelt next to her and put my hand on her side. I could see the breathes get shallower and shallower, but I could still feel a heart beat.

Then the heart beat stopped. It just stopped. I still can’t believe I felt her last heart beat with my own hand.

Always a happy pup, with so much intelligence in those eyes.

Always a happy pup, with so much intelligence in those eyes.

I didn’t know what else to do, so I went on a run to clear my head. I made sure to run her favorite routes. I think she was with me in spirit and enjoyed being able to get back out there like when she was younger.

When I got back, the kids were waking, so we let them say goodbye to her. She was always so gentle with them.

Bailey and Grif a couple years ago. Just chillin.

Bailey and Grif a couple years ago. Just chillin.

Today we are supposed to pick up her ashes. I’ll be sure to take them with us on our walks whenever possible. She always loved our walks………..

Goodbye sweet Bailey girl.

Run + Taco + Soccer + Yoga + Celeb + Swan Balloon

It’s been a crazy few days, kids. We had an uhmaizeeng cold front come through. One day it was over 100 degrees, the next day I woke up and it was in the 60’s! All us North Texas runners were absolutely giddy!

I met up with WRRC to run. The group I fell in with went 12 miles at an 8:30 pace, and it felt easy peasy lemon squeezy!!!

It almost looks like a dog.

It almost looks like a dog.

Afterwards I wanted breakfast tacos, of course. So I hit up a taco joint called Taco Joint.

Migas taco. Weird shrimp lookin thing behind me.

Crazy eyes. Migas taco. Weird shrimp lookin thing behind me.

I gotta tell ya, it was like a party up in therre. It was before 9am but it was PACKED with runners from different run groups – as well as a few doctors fresh off the overnight shift. And the bar was open, and the drinks were flowin. It was seriously poppin.

I couldn’t partake tho cause up next I was coaching the boy’s soccer game.

Kick the ball int he goal over there.

Kick the ball in the goal over there.

My parents came out and took some photos.

Aaaand KICK!

Aaaand KICK!

Luckily the boy’s good running form helps him out in soccer too!

He's flying.

He’s flying.

And the day didn’t stop there. My buddy messaged me that he had some extra tix to the FC Dallas pro soccer match. I took him up on it.

My bud with the hook up.

My bud with the hook up.

My dad and brother also joined me. It was a rare men’s night out!

The Evans Lads.

The Evans Lads.

And FC Dallas won the game!!

Go team go!

Go team go! I think that guy in front of us is taking a selfie, too bad the field is in front of him. #turnarounddude

The next morning I was up early again to join my runnin bud Serene for a trail run.

The squiggly part is where I was I was looking for my keys.

The squiggly part is where I was I was looking for my keys.

After the trails we went to yoga. Someone brought their pet.

He's good at 'down dog'

He’s a natural at ‘down dog’

Then I gotta tell ya that something random happened. I ran into Dallas Cowboy legend Charles Haley at the store. Big guy.

Too bad I'm a Browns fan.

Too bad I’m a Browns fan.

Finafreakinly our neighborhood had a block party. Complete with balloon animals.

Stop looking at me swan.

Stop looking at me swan.

I was pooped (not literally). Such a fun weekend, but so much tired. I laid on the couch to wind down with the DVR, but my eyelids promptly closed. Out cold. Dreams of sugar plums (whatever those are).

How bout you? Great weekend? 9 am party-ers out there? What’s your spirit balloon animal?

Christmas (Weather) in July! I Opened a Running Present.

This week has been amazebutt. North Texas got rain and a few days of cooler temps! I have taken full advantage.

I’ve run pretty much every day this week (including in the rain). I’ve taken the dogs/kids on walks each night. It’s all been so refreshing.

Bailey was not impressed with my imitation of her tongue panting.

Bailey was not impressed with my imitation of her tongue panting.

Today was going to be a rest day, but when I woke up and saw temps in the 60’s – I had to run. We don’t get these chances very often – Just early this week it was 100 degrees – that’s a nice change of pace! Of course, the humidity was 95%, but it still felt pretty cool with the temps and cloud cover.

I’ll take it!   Normally this time of year we are trying to cool down with…

I’m hoping the temps linger on a bit longer – I’d at least like to get in the weekend long runs if possible. Here’s hoping!

How bout you? Taking advantage of the weather where you are (I hope it’s pleasant)?  Weekend plans?  Anyone going for frozen yogurt?

Running Stare Down & USA Wins the World Cup*

*I know it was only their first match of the tournament that they won, but wouldn’t it be nice to be able to write that for realz!?! A boy can dream, can’t he?

Anyway, to watch the match I met up with my dad and elusive bro at a local pub.  This was the scene when they scored the winning goal…

I love how soccer has become so popular in the States recently.  I wish when I was a kid that they had a pro league and showed Euro Leagues and World Cup matches on TV.  Oh well, I’m enjoying it now!

Still on the winning high, I got up this morning for my run.  Despite only getting a few hours sleep due to a certain 2 year old waking up at 4am, I still had a pretty good run.  That is until I was going through ‘my’ park and I saw two German Shepherds hauling arse across the field.  I stopped in my tracks not wanting them to chase me.  I didn’t see any owners.  Then I thought maybe I saw them wrong, maybe they are coyotes.  Time to assess the situation.  But then I saw the owners…

A male and female couple.  They came around the corner.  They were throwing balls for the dogs to chase.  Clearly violating the leash law.  I gave them a stare down to let them know it was not cool that they were interrupting my run.  I still wasn’t moving because I didn’t know if the dogs wouldn’t come after me.  I kept staring until they finally waved at me.  I did not wave back.  I know, rude much.  But they were rude for not having their dogs on a leash when there’s runners and kids around.  I waited till the dogs were going in the opposite direction and continued on my way.

I’m glad to report I made it home safely.  Crisis adverted.  You can breath easy now.

How bout you?  Did you see the US victory in their opening match?  Give anyone a stare down lately?  How many bar flies did I catch in my mouth?
