Beer Mile Race Recap – Someone Puked

The latest TNSR Beer Mile came and went. And I’m happy to report it went much better than my previous attempt.

Everyone is all smiles before the race...that would change.

Everyone is all smiles before the race…that would change.

I wouldn’t set a PR this day, but I still had a decent time, and I didn’t blow chunks – that’s always a win in the Beer Mile. Not everyone there could say the same thing. A few people in the pictures in this blog vomited. I won’t say who, but maybe you can take guesses.

At least one person in this pic puked.

At least one smiley clean shaven person in this pic puked.

If you’ve never done the Beer Mile, what happens is you pound a beer, sprint a quarter mile – then repeat until you drink 4 beers and run one mile total.

We were so official this year - bibs, timers, and we were provided with Mich Ultra beers.

We were so official this year – bibs, timers, and we were provided with Mich Ultra beers.

What makes it tough is all the carbonation bubbling up in your belly. Well, that and 48 ounces of liquid sloshing around as you try to sprint 400’s. If you can’t get some burps out, then you’re in trouble. I’m happy to report that I burped each lap!!!

Someone in this pic may or may not have puked.

And even though I didn’t PR, I did come in 4th place overall – just missing out on the podium.

The official results.

The official results.

Looking back, I think a couple things helped me out this year – Like I said, I worked really hard to make sure I burped. But also, I chose to drink warm beers instead of cold – tasted nasty, but had less carbonation. <taps head> “Not just a hat rack.”

Thanks for another great event, TNSR!

Thanks for another great event, TNSR!

And after the race they had food grillin, music blastin & fun havin. I even made a 6 second video about it…

All in all a good time was had by all – even the folks who hurled.

Kanye was upset at his race results.

Kanye was upset at his race results…or maybe because he puked.

Luckily these Beer Mile races don’t happen too often – they really do hurt. But I did have a great time and look forward to the next one!

How bout you? Would you ever want to do a Beer Mile? Have you ever? Any guesses as to the pukers?

Runnning in Yellow, Beer Mile, & Belch Prayers

What up, playas? Beachy keen, I hope. I’ve been bad about the blog recently. Just so flippin busy all the time. But here’s what’s been goin down…

I’ve been running, natch.

I drew a line for you, oh what a thing to do, and it was all yellow.

I drew a line for you, oh what a thing to do, and it was all yellow. Yes, it’s nike+, add me: piratebobcat

I’m still in pre-training mode for Chicago Marathon, so that just means trying to keep the mileage at a decent number to try and stay fit and healthy.

And you know that thing runners do when they finish a run and look at their gps and realize they’re a little short of the next mile and so they run circles around the block until it clicks over? Yeah, well the other day I was a qtr  mile short and so I ran laps around a giant fountain. The people eating nearby thought I was nuts.

Me and my fountain training partner.

And if you’re familiar with me, then you know how I love me some tacos. Well get this – a new Torchy’s opened up near one of my go to running spots. So the little group I was with had to go there post-run…natch!

Yes, it's snapchat, add me: piratebobcat

I make bunny ears look good. Yes, it’s snapchat, add me: piratebobcat

And here’s some exciting news: I’ve signed up for a couple races!!! And the best part, both of them are free! One is a 10k that I’ll post about another time. But the other is this week – the annual TNSR Beer Mile!

The happy group pre-race.

The happy group last year pre-race.

I think this is the 3rd or 4th year for this unofficial race. But it’s raised a few eyebrows as it’s gone on. And this year it will raise a few more because TNSR will be providing MichUltra, race bibs, etc. Getting closer to official!

11206813_916020128462787_7650387218467819814_oIf you’ve never done a beer mile – here’s what happens.

1-Drink a beer

2-Sprint a quarter mile

3-Repeat until you reach 4 beers/1 mile total.

I’ve done the TNSR beer mile twice. It’s a VERY tough thing to try to do. Last year I felt like death during the race – it was awful.

I think my face sums it up.

Sloshing to the finish. I think my face/posture sums it up.

The first time I did it, I came in 2nd place overall. I felt much better during that race. The difference – I was able to burp out all the carbonation along the way. I really really hope this year’s experience is more like that one. Please, pray for burps for me!!

A trophy, yay!

A trophy, yay!

Come back soon for the race recap!!!

Until then, I’m proud to be giving out a few more blogger shout outs to the latest dope individuals who contributed to my Chicago Marathon Charity Fundraiser. Thanks so much to: Running Wild, Run to Race, & Darlin’ Rae  I promise I’ll get on your thank you pics/videos soon!

I’m overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. I really am. Thanks so much! If anyone else wants to donate, you can do so HERE.

How bout you? Ever run a beer mile? Ever run circles to make the next mile click over? Will you pray for burps?

Next up was the Rudolph Run 5k. And yet another PR – officially 21:29, but my watch had the course being long. According to it I came across at 20:50-something. Either way, I got 2nd in my age group!

The end of the year was spent with friends and family for the holidays.

Looking back, it was a pretty good year. Lots of tacos, shows, good times, and running. In fact, I went over 1,200 miles on my feet. I even surpassed 5,000 miles total with my Nike+ watch – starting when I got it a few years ago.

Beer Mile Recap

Blergh, this was a wonderfully awful experience.  It was wonderful hanging with cool runner folks.  It was awful trying to sprint 400’s after chugging beers.

The happy group pre-race.

The happy group pre-race.

In my preview, I wrote how last year I finished 2nd overall in this race with a time of 9:49.  Wow, did I have a far worse go of it this year.

And we're off!!! Apparently my arm was already cramping.

And we’re off!!! I decided to deploy the deadly right arm chicken wing attack.

After the first beer/lap I was hurting.  My belly was distended…pregnant with a huge bubble of air/carbonation pressing against my diaphragm.  I thought I might hurl and moved to the bushes.  But I burped it out and was able to continue.  However, each lap/beer left me with the same bloated belly.  It was not pleasant.

I finished about four and a half minutes slower than last year’s time – 14:16.

I think my face sums it up.

I think my face/posture sums up how I felt.

In the end, we still had fun.  I need to give big ups to Thursday Night Social Run for hosting this race and to Tory and Josh for putting it on and providing the post run BBQ.

Meat me at the courtyard.

Meat me at the courtyard.

It was definitely a learning experience.  Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to run a few miles to warm up before hand.  Maybe my choice of beer (Shiner Bock) was not good for this event.  But this was only my second Beer Mile.  We’ll see if the future holds any more.

Post run.  Shiny happy people.

Post run. Shiny happy people.

Warning, if you do one of these races, it’s not easy.  Prepare yourself.  And the beers kind of start hitting you by the third lap.  In fact, one friend there had the quote of the night, “My vision is definitely compromised.”

Questions:  Seriously, any tips for Beer Mile?  How would you do drinking four beers while you sprint four 1/4 miles?  Talk to me!

The 3rd Annual TNSR Beer Mile – Race Preview

Tonight I get to run a race! It’s the 3rd Annual Thursday Night Social Run Beer Mile.  This is an unofficial race. It’s not a sanctioned event, but then again, how many Beer Miles are?

I ran this race last year (it was my first ever Beer Mile) and I was fortunate enough to finish in 2nd place!  You can read my recap of that race HERE.

A trophy, yay!

A trophy, yay!

Oh wait, I forgot to explain what a Beer Mile is. Here’s the breakdown:

  1. The clock starts.
  2. Everyone drinks a 12 oz beer as fast as they can (it is a race afterall).
  3. Run ¼ mile lap as fast as you can.
  4. Repeat until you finish four laps/beers.

Last year I finished the Beer Mile in 9:49.  Being that this is a race, I hope to do well and try for a PR.  I’m hoping the experience from last year’s race will help me.  I know not to go out too fast, as pretty much everyone last year who did crashed by the 2nd lap.  Kind of like a normal race, huh?

~~~Run with your head the first half, run with your heart the second half~~~
Hopefully the track work I've been doing will translate to the Beer Mile!
Hopefully the track work I’ve been doing will translate to the Beer Mile!
That said, I’m still planning on just having fun with it.  I remember it wasn’t the most pleasant race I’ve ever run, what with all that brew sloshing around in my tummy.  But it should be a blast anyway!  Stay tuned for the recap!
Questions:  Have you ever run a Beer Mile?  Any strategy tips?  Any other advice?
-Scott
PS – Congrats to the USA advancing today in the World Cup!!!!  We got out of the “Group of Death” and we’re on to the knockout stage! I hope we knock someone out! #ibelievethatwewillwin
Race Recap: The Beer Mile
So I did my first beer mile.  First off, let me say that this was mostly a fun social race, as opposed to an official one.  The timers were people holding iPhones.  The course was not exactly 1/4 mile, but it was pretty darn close.  And from what I understand, we may not have followed all the rules.  Supposedly you’re supposed to all drink the same beers from their bottles.  Not sure if that is true, but we didn’t do that anyways.  It was BYOB, and most people had Mich Ultra, Miler Lite, or the like.  I had Guinness.  This surprised many people and they said I was crazy, but I saw it as an advantage.  It’s less carbonated than those fizzy light beers, it tastes better when it’s not ice cold unlike those other brews, it has a little less alcohol too, and since it takes time to settle I had them poured into red Solo cups.  Drinking from a cup helped me too cause there’s more surface area for air to touch the beer and help add pressure to help push it out of the cup and into my mouth.  Trust me, I’m a scientist (no I’m not).
I also had a “pit crew” whom I relied on to have the beer waiting for me after each lap.  She not only poured the beers while I was on the previous lap, but could hand them to me – easier than searching for it on a table of a bunch of other beers.
BTW, I guess I need to explain what a Beer Mile is.  You drink a beer, run a quarter mile, repeat until you reach one mile.  I was fortunate enough to come in 2nd place – beating several runners who are much faster than I.  I think my strategy of drinking Guinness helped.  Plus I did a two mile warm up run to get loose.  I ended up finishing in 9 mins 49 secs.  Not bad!
A trophy, yay!
A trophy, yay!
Here’s the breakdown:  Beer one, everyone pretty much chugged em down pretty fast and we were off and running.  My plan was to keep a steady pace and not go out too fast.  Just like any race, there are always the majority of folks who go too fast at the start and struggle at the end.  Negative splitz is the goal!  Indeed people went all out the first lap.  I finished in somewhere near 10th place.  Then came the second beer – all the sprinters were gasping for air and the cold fizzy beers went down very slowly.  I still had control of my breath and was able to down mine pretty quickly.  From that point on I was in 2nd place.  I wasn’t able to catch the super speedy dude ahead of me and nobody else could recover after the first lap to catch me.  I hear there was a barfer or two, and some people had to drop out.  But everyone who competed is still a champ!
It was not an easy race.  Lots of people complained about being hard to run with full bellies.  I lucked out on my 3rd and 4th laps because I was so full I didn’t think I could run anymore, but after a few bouncy steps….BEEELLLCHHH!  Apparently chugging a beer, when you’re already huffing and puffing, traps a lot of air in your belly.  Who knew?  After the burps, I was back to my pace.  Funniest moment came when I was trying to get those burps out – both times this guy next to me kept saying, “It’s coming up!  It’s coming up!”  I’m not sure if he puked or not, but was funny to hear him narrate it like that.
It was an interesting experience, I’ll say that much.  We even made some new friends as a baby shower that was going on at the same place asked if the mama could take her picture with us.  They said we were as much a part of the night as their own people.  I guess we were entertaining to watch.
Our group with the mom to be (hint - she's not wearing running clothes)
OK, off to the track.  Gotta get faster for the next one!
Holla!
Race Preview: The Beer Mile
This is something runners do apparently…even elite runners have been known to take on this challenge (much more common than I assumed).  I have never done it.  There is one tonight with Thursday Night Social Run.  I am thinking about trying it.  I’m curious how I’d do.  But let me break it down for you.
First, you drink a beer, then run a quarter mile, repeat until you reach a mile.  The first one to finish wins.  So that means you have to run fast and drink fast.
I’ve already worked out today and will want to get some extra miles in before the race so my legs won’t be fresh, but hey, it’s my first time at this kind of event so automatic PR!
I think beer choice will be key.  I could go for some glorified water (mic ultra), but I think I should drink a real beer.  I’m thinking Guinness.  Now I know some people think of Guinness as a meal, and it can be but I like it.  I find it smooth and much less carbonated than other beers.  I think the lower the carbonation, the better for this race.  And I have won a couple Guinness chugging contests, so that could come in handy.  Now sprinting a quarter after doing so, that’s another story.
And besides…..
If a sign says it, it must be true!
If a sign says it, it must be true!
The other key will be drinking it from a cup, because if you try to drink from a can or bottle, not enough air gets in there fast enough to push the liquid into your mouth.  See, I’m a scientist.  Not really.  Creative types don’t usually like sciency stuff.  BTW, don’t ask me how I know that trick, that’s a story for another day.
Anyway, that’s all I’ve got.  Not sure what to expect, but hopefully it will be fun!
Peace.
