I was able to eventually get active again by doing a lot of yoga in a retail store.

In between training, I also got to see some of my fave bands…like at this FREE concert – The Killers!

Then came the Fall. Autumn is always a time of change. For us, a big change was the boy starting kindergarten. Where does the time go???

He's grown about 5 times his size. Based on that growth rate, I figure he'll be about 80 feet tall by his 20's.

But in happier times, I set another PR at the North Texas Turkey Trot 5k 20:04. Bummer was the course being .1 miles short.

Next up was the Rudolph Run 5k. And yet another PR – officially 21:29, but my watch had the course being long. According to it I came across at 20:50-something. Either way, I got 2nd in my age group!

Last year's race was cancelled due to ice. So I got two medals!

And as part of the Dallas Marathon festivities, I got to meet MEB!!!!!!

The end of the year was spent with friends and family for the holidays.

Looking back, it was a pretty good year. Lots of tacos, shows, good times, and running. In fact, I went over 1,200 miles on my feet. I even surpassed 5,000 miles total with my Nike+ watch – starting when I got it a few years ago.

Here’s hoping 2015 will be even better! Happy New Year, y’all!

Today’s only question: What’s your top 2014 highlight?

Race Photos (not all bad)

The other week I ran in a 5k (Abby’s Run for Dandy Walker Syndrome).  I wanted to do well because I know the race directors and the race was raising funds for a good cause.  And I did do pretty good – 5th overall and 1st in my division.  You can read the recap HERE.

In the recap you can see some other photos from the day (including the super awesome medal).

Anyway, they recently posted the official race photos, so I thought I’d share the ones that have me in them (because I’m so shy and modest).  Click on them to enlarge…

Milling about before the start - I'm off to the side behind the flag pole talking to my friend Pepsi. Yes, her actual name is Pepsi. I guess her parents were fans of sugar drinks???

And we're off! I'm in there somewhere. BTW, none of those determined kids were able to sustain that pace past 50 yards. So yes, I had to do some weaving to get around them.

Managed half a smirk for the camera. That dude behind me is wondering why I’m ahead of him – we have the same shoes after all!  Pepsi is back there in the hat.  She would’ve been next to me, but her hat fell off at the start and she had to run after it.  Yes, her real name is Pepsi.

The blue shirt same shoes dude is no longer in my photos!

5th place finisher!

At the finish – All alone in 5th place!

The next one is not an official race photo.  A friend snapped it and emailed it to me later…

I'm all thumbs.

I’m all thumbs.

So there they are, the long lost race photos (from two weeks ago).  Not too bad – compared to how I usually look (not flattering).  And it’s really cool of them to send them to us for free!!!!  Such a great event all around!

How bout you?  Any recent race photos?  What do you think the dude behind me the first mile was thinking?  Do you know anyone named Pepsi?  Why do kids always line up at the front of the race (I mean, come on)?

Abby’s Race for Dandy Walker

In the morning I’m running the race that’s in the title.  My friend is the race director.  Meet Ann:

Proof that we're friends. That's me and her in a race from the other year.

Proof that we’re friends. That’s me and her in a race from the other year.

She’s race director because her friend’s daughter has Dandy Walker Syndrome.  This race raises funds to help out these sweet little kiddos with Dandy Walker.

The little girl’s name is Abby.  Hence the name of the race.

Dandy Walker Syndrome is most unfortunate.  I’ve been briefed on it, and basically Abby was born missing 30% of her brain.

Last year I did alright in this race. You can read my recap HERE

It wasn’t my fastest time, but I still finished like 3rd overall and 1st in my age group.  Just goes to prove that you never know who your competition will be at any given race.  😉  I was glad that I could come through for a good cause.  It’s still one of my fave medals.

Hand painted by a kid with kid with Dandy Walker.

So again in the morning I will run this race.  I hope to have a good performance.  Why?  Well of course, I always want to PR.  I also want to support my friends.  Buuuuut I also really enjoy and get extra motivation when I know the race is supporting a good cause.  We’ll see how it goes.

How bout you?  Does the charity help you choose a race?  How cool is that medal?

Abby’s Run For Dandy-Walker Review

So last week I wrote a preview of this 5k race.  Now I’m writing the review.  As I said in the preview, my friend was the race director and the race benefits Dandy-Walker Syndrome.  The race is named for a little girl with the condition, coincidentally named Abby.  She was at the race, that was cool.

At the start. In a crowd.

At the start. In a crowd.

The 5k took place in Frisco, Texas.  I’ve run quite a few races in Frisco, and I’ve spoken to quite a few of the race directors from those races.  From what I gather, the City isn’t always too cooperative with the race organizers and don’t like closing roads.  That’s the reason why so many of the races in town include multiple laps, 180 degree switchbacks, etc.  I’m assuming that’s why this race was a two lapper with one switchback.  I normally don’t like it when you have to run multiple laps because that means halfway through the race you have to pass by the finish line.  That always seems like such a tease!  But this race I hardly noticed it because at that point two people had caught me and I was trying to hold them off (I did!).  And I didn’t mind the switchback because it let me see how close the runners behind me were.

At the finish. All alone.

At the finish. All alone.

Why did it matter how close they were and why did I want to fight off other runners?  Because I wanted to do well in this race since I knew so many people involved with it and because I had lots of friends and families there.  I was lucky enough to finish officially 3rd overall and 1st in my age group!  Technically there was a friend of mine who beat me, but he was wearing another injured friend’s bib, so I guess his time didn’t count cause he’s not listed on the official results?  I still count it as finishing 4th for me.

Abby's Run with Scott's Finish places.

Abby’s Run with Scott’s Finish places.

To be fair, it wasn’t an extremely competitive field.  This is only the second year for this race, and they’re still trying to make it grow, but talking to some of the organizers, they said they were very pleased with the turnout as it was waaaay more than they had last year.  I hope it can continue to grow!

And I was glad I ran a smart race.  I didn’t go out too fast like some others did who I later passed.  And I was able to be smart when we were running face first into the extremely windy wind!  I had done a warm up with my friend Brian, who won the race, and we previewed the course and strategized where to conserve energy and where to let it fly.  I stuck to the plan and it paid off!

Some of our group. We brought home some hardware!

Some of our group. We brought home some hardware!

I think they did a great job with the whole event.  It started with a one mile fun run.  And they had some trainers out there warming people up.  They also had a whole village set up with sponsors tents and activities for kids!  That was a cool thing that you don’t see much – a whole section devoted to keeping kids entertained.

But the coolest thing was how this race benefits a great cause.  And I was VERY proud to accept my medal for winning my age group because they were hand made by some of the children who are affected by Dandy-Walker.

I'll treasure this one fo shizzle.

I’ll treasure this one fo shizzle.

Each medal is unique and mine had a cool painting design on it.  I wish I knew who the kid was who made it so I could thank him/her.  Maybe next year!

Abby’s Run for Dandy-Walker Syndrome Preview

So my friend Ann also has another friend.  That friend has a little girl named Abby.  Abby has Dandy-Walker Syndrome.  What is D-W Syndrome?  Here’s a description taken from the Abby’s Run website:

“Dandy-Walker Syndrome is a birth defect that affects 1 in every 2,500 babies that are born living, like Abby. It is a brain malformation at the back of the brain which affects the cerebellum. The cerebellum is responsible for motor functions, movement, co-ordination, motor control, attention, sensory perception, mental imagery, and language functions to name a few. There is no cure.

Basically a large part of what should be her brain is fluid instead.  Needless to say she needs lots of medical care.

So to help raise funds for research, Ann and her friend founded Abby’s Run.  It is a 5k taking place in Frisco, TX.  This is a passionate cause for Ann, and I’d like to help, so I registered to run!

Proof that Ann helped me finish. Get it? Proof? Come on.

Proof that I actually do know Ann – here’s a picture of us running.  (I’m the one in black)

I hope to do well in this race.  I haven’t been doing any track work, but I have been running around a 7:30 pace in my 3-5 mile weekday runs.  I hope that translates to a good finishing time come racing day.  Either way, it should be fun and knowing that some other friends will be there will make it even more so.  And like I said it’s all for a good cause!

I’ll post a race recap after the fact, as it’s pretty difficult to post a recap before the fact.

Best of luck to all involved!
