A Pirate Looks at 40 ~ The Birthday Post

Yup, it’s my 40th birthday. Not sure how that happened. Seems like it was just the other day when I was a kid in a party store looking at all the “over-the-hill” gag items. I remember thinking that that was like a million years away. Haha, it’s a lot closer now.

Thoughts from this morning's run.

Thoughts from this morning’s run. I only received a few complaints form neighbors.

I was reading an article recently about how people tend to make major life decisions as they approach the end of a decade. For example, they said as you reach the age of 30, 40, 50, etc. you have a higher rate of suicide, or signing up for a marathon.

Well, I’d kind of like to keep on livin. So I guess I’ll choose the running option. Even though I’ve run some marathons, I’d like to run more…only faster!

One of this week's runs. It's like an upsidedown deflating birthday party balloon.

And yes, my birthday does fall the day after St. Pats. Which sounds cool, but in reality everyone is too worn to want to do any more partying. That’s ok though, I can kind of combine them.

We’ll be celebrating later, but I’m not exactly sure what the party plans are yet. But I do know this, I need a cake hat like the boy had at his birthday.

We're just a group of mouth-breathers.

We’re just a group of mouth-breathers.

The good news is that I’m now in a new racing age group! Hopefully I can be competitive!

In addition, it was pointed out that my Boston Qualifying Standard is a little slower now! Woo hoo! Now I only need to run a 3:15 marathon! That means I just have to run my 10k pace for for 42k…….er, uh, wait. I guess I have some work to do!

You have to be fast as a unicorn to qualify.

You have to be fast as a bearded unicorn to qualify.

I’ll leave you now with this. It’s some lyrics from the song that’s been stuck in my head all week:

Yes, I am a pirate two hundred years too late
Cannons don’t thunder there’s nothin’ to plunder
I’m an over forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late

-Jimmy Buffett from “A Pirate Looks at 40”

How bout you? Any milestone birthdays coming up/just passed? Did you get me anything? Ever run in your birthday suit on your birthday?

-Scott

  1. Happy birthday, my friend! As far as I’m concerned, age is just a number, and I tend not to get too worked up about “milestone” birthdays. I turn 29 in May and I’m not freaked out about 30 at all.

    • Thank you, my friend! Yeah, I’ve never worried about age much, but 40 always seemed so far away. Haha! Ooooh, happy premature birthday to you! No reason to fear the 30’s, I actually loved them!

  2. Happy Happy Happy Birthday Pirate Bobcat!!

  3. Happy Birthday!!! If I lived close, I’d buy ya a Guinness. My hubby was totally bummed when he couldn’t have one last night “because the tap wasn’t working”. I think you could have classed up your birthday suit run with a boa or tiara or SOMETHING!!! When I turned 40, I decided to learn how to swim so I could do a 70.3. One year later, I did my 70.3 and am now signed up for the 140.6. THAT’S how insane I got when I turned 40. Good luck!!! πŸ™‚

    • Thank you! I’ll take a raincheck on that pint! You have a Guinness tap in your house?
      Dang, you’re right, I shold’ve boa’d it up! I’m such an amateur!
That’s awesome about your half and full ironmans! Hahah, but yeah, you did go insane!

  4. Happy birthday Scott!!! We’re almost bday twins. I also ran 10 on my bday! Have fun celebrating!

    • Thank you! I’ve been out of the blog world recently…when was your birthday? Either way, I hope it was very happy!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. TartanJogger

Many happy returns! You’re 7months ahead of me, and always will be…. β˜ΊοΈπŸ˜‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‚πŸ˜œ

  6. Happy birthday! I do love Guinness but I can’t have them anymore unless it’s cooked in food. It’s still good that way πŸ˜‰

I’m still in denial that I’m in my 40s, so I can’t help you there. Welcome to the over the hill club!

    • I had a Guinness fruit cake that I bought in a little bakery in Galway, Ireland. It was amazeballs!
Wait, maybe I should go into denial too. OK, I’m just 39.9. Whew!

  7. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCOTTY THE PIRATE!!!! Hope you had a great day! Lol I know you’ll BQ some day!!

    • THANKS SO MUCH AMY THE FITNESS FROSTER!!!!! It has been a fun celebration. Ha, I keep getting faster, so maybe BQ won’t be so out of reach in a few years.

  8. Happy Birthday!!

  9. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

  10. Amanda Hagley

Happy belated birthday! Those lyrics at the end are simply perfect. Enjoy your new chapter, fellow bobcat.

    • I’m not sure how I missed this until now…but Thanks so much Amanda! I’ve always loved that song, and it seemed fitting. Hope you’re well, Go Cats!

  11. Happy Birthday!!! I hope you had an amazing day!

  12. Sue @ This Mama Runs For Cupcakes

Happy Belated Birthday!! I turn 39 this year and all I can think of is that if I run a marathon after September I can qualify in the 40 age group for Boston πŸ™‚ 5 minutes is a lot, but holy cow, you guys have it rough. 3:15?! Women is 3:45!

    • Thanks so much!!! Hahaha, don’t think that I haven’t been eyeballing that BQ time standard too. But yeah, 3:15 is pretty harsh. Maybe I can register a race as a woman????
      Save me a birthday cupcake!

  13. Happy Birthday! That whole BQ nonsense works a lot better for us ladies. Going from a 3:35 (which was already attainable) to a 3:40 looks great for me. But a 3:10 to a 3:15 is still ouch! My husband is in the same boat and he doesn’t like when I point out his qualifying times get better. Hope you had a great birthday!

    • Thank you!!! Yeah, I think I need to register for a marathon as a female. I have a much better shot at running a 3:45 than a 3:15. Sheesh! Haha, yeah, 5 minutes doesn’t really help that much
      Thank you!

  14. charissarunning

Happy birthday!!! Hope you enjoyed it. I love running on my birthday πŸ™‚
3:15 is still tough but I believe you can do it! I’m in the same boat where I have to run my current 10k pace for a marathon if I want to qualify. But we can do it! Have fun making it happen!! Research about popular BQ races. I think I’ll be doing Steamtown later this year which is a net downhill course and is known for producing faster paces πŸ˜€

    • Thank you!!! It’s been fun! Yes, birthday runs are great! Why not?
Thanks so much for the support. I’ve learned a lot the last year alone in my running, and I’ll continue to work to get faster. And yes, I know you can do it too! We will extend our 10k pace to a full 26.2 one day! Hmmm, I’ll look into Steamtown too!!!

  15. Happy birthday!!!!

  16. Happy belated Birthday! 40 isn’t bad at all, it’s the new 30. I guess that means I am turning 35 in a few weeks.

  17. Happiest of birthday’s–I didn’t know it at the time, but I ate tacos for dinner in your honor! Hope you had a great day!

  18. Happy Birthday!! You don’t even look 40! More like 35!
And I hear that turning 40 is wonderful because you just start to care less about the little stuff and that it is liberating! So cheers to this awesome birthday!!

    • Thanks so much! Ha, maybe the running is keeping me young looking? Hmmmm, thanks for the thoughts. That is something to look forward to!!!!!

  19. Happy (belated) Birthday Pirate Bobcat! 40 is the new 30!! I’m already over the hill and can offer some advice, you do care a whole lot less what people think once you hit 40. I can only imagine what kind of stuff you’ll be up to over the next few years as a result! That whole BQ time is crazy, in another 5 years do you get another 5 minutes?

    • Thanks so much Angie!!! Yes, it feels so great to turn 30-40! Hmmm, that’s good to hear about sweating what other people think less – does that mean you’ll be posting more selfies? πŸ˜‰ Yes, I’ll try to have fun like you do! And yes, BQ is nutso! Ooooh, I just looked it up, and yes, when I turn 45 it goes up a full 10 minutes! Woohoo!

  20. Happy birthday!! I hope it was an amazing start to 40! Oh wow, only 3:15 huh…You could speed walk that right??
