Dallas 13.1 Half Marathon Recap – New PR!!!

Well it looks like all the extra mileage I’ve been running is paying off. I set a new 5k PR at Oktoberfest, ran within one second of that PR at last week’s Mavs 5k, and then two days later PR’d by nearly 5 minutes in the Michelob Ultra Dallas 13.1 Marathon.

Shiny new PR, shiny new medal, dull bumpy tongue.

My goals going into this race were:

1.PR

2. Run sub-8 minute miles

3. Negative split

4, Have fun

I’m glad to say that I accomplished each goal – finishing in 1:42:59!!!!

The weather was warm – 70 at the start, and fairly humid, and a bit windy. Also they changed the course this year ~ unnicely adding in some rolling hills the first half of the course. There was also a nasty little zig zag of a couple 180 degree turns at on little section. They also feature an unwelcome hill at mile 12.

There was also very little crowd support and entertainment along the course. But overall, it’s still a good course and race. Like I said, I PR’d, and so did several of my friends.

Some of my PR friends. We did it big..until that guy stole our water bottle.

I took it out easy and slowly increased speed as I went. Once we got to the Katy Trail section of the course, I could see the 1:45 pacer off in the distance. I ended up catching him around mile 10 and was able to pass him by a good distance. At the water stops I would look over my shoulder to make sure I was keeping my lead on him.

The White Rock Running Co-op group. Everyone had a great outing!

The White Rock Running Co-op and Thursday Night Social Run folks. Everyone had a great outing!

Unfortunately I dropped my Gu packet around mile 10, so I had to rely on the Gatorade at the water stations. I walked through three of them, but I didn’t lose too much time doing so, luckily.

My buddy Terrance ran his first half marathon!

When I got to the last turn, I only saw two people in front of me, and I kicked it in, using them as goals to pass…I did! I even heard a shout out from the race announcer.

My Sunday Runday pal, Serene also PR'd!

I also had two friends in this race who finished 2nd and 1st overall!!! Speedy dudes!

Brent and Logan collecting their hardware.

After the race they had a fun band playing, but I felt bad for them because it was so hot out that everyone was hiding in the shaded areas. Well, except for one hula hooper…

Besides the bazillion friends I had running this race, I also had a gagillion more who were there to cheer. Great people.

I'm a selfie artist.

In the end, this race is known for PR’s. Despite the changes this year, that reputation held true. It was a fun event with lots of fun friends!

Boom.

How we do.

How bout you? Know any races where people usually PR? Did you know hula hoopers love Bobby Brown music? Anyone else race this weekend? Or do two races???

Great job on all your PRs – you’re having an incredible month! Keep it up with the speed!
I raced this weekend too and thought I could get a new PR on a flat course. Wound up 2 minutes off my PR time (still a good race) but turns out I need a little up and down b/c my legs got tired from the monotony of those 13 miles. I never would’ve thought I’d be hoping for more hills in a race before!

    • Thanks so much! I guess all the hard work I did in the summer is paying off now. Feels good! Sorry about missing your PR, but congrats on a great race. Wow, I’ve never heard anyone wish for hills before, hahaha!

  3. Fantastic! You beat my time this weekend. What’s up next on your race schedule?

  4. Hooray! Congrats! WOW your friend is tall! and your other friend collecting the trophy…I’m diggin his shorts!! lol You sure do have some good-looking friends there! (and you fit right in πŸ˜‰ I know tons of hula-hoopers actually. They are a wild bunch, and nothing stops them from dancing

    • Thanks!!! I know right?!? He used to be a pro basketball player – just now getting into running. Ha yes, Brent likes to wear short colorful shorts. To each their own!

    • THAAANNNNKKSSSS! Yes, it feels great to finally race after working hard in the long hot summer. Yes, it was a blasty blast. Thank you!!

  6. You did amazing, especially considering it was still warm and there were hills. You DA MAN!!!

    • Thank you!!!! Yeah, it’s been in the 90’s still, but a cold front is coming and it’s supposed to be in the 30’s tomorrow – what? A 60 degree drop in one night???

  7. Wowzah. Somebody had a big old cup of ZIPPY for breakfast! Nice work! 2 PRs in one weekend???!?!? Tacos for everyone!!!

ps. Please tell Brent that I heart his shorts. Those are way jazzy.

    Nice work Scott!

    • Haha, thanks!!! I was targeting this race for a while, so glad it went well.
      Yes, tacos for all!!

Haha, yeah, Brent likes to wear those kinds of shorts. It’s his ‘thang’.

      Thank you!!!

    Woop woop! Nice one!

  9. Awesome! Negative splits are the best. You’ve had a helluva running season.

  10. Congrats on the PR!!! That’s awesome! I ran a 5k fun run Saturday which was a lot of FUN!

  11. Nicely done once again!!

  12. Great job! I’ve never done a long race in hot weather. You killed it.

    • Thanks so much!!! Well, we don’t have much choice in Texas but to race in hot weather. Excited to get a couple months of cool weather soon!

  13. Awesome job! I’m very impressed. You seem to know everyone who raced, which is very impressive too. Congrats Mr. Speedy!

    • Thank you!!! Yes, it’s crazy how many people I know in our running community now. After I parked and was walking to the start, I had to stop like 12 times to say hi to folks. Love it!

  14. That’s a whole lot of PR’s and congrats on a killer finish time! Hopefully they didn’t serve 8 ounce cups of beer this time.

    • Thanks so much! Haha, I thought of you as I drank unlimited free bottles of ‘beer’ (I still think Mich Ultra is mostly watered down water)

  15. Melissa

    Congrats!

The 3M half in Austin is mostly downhill, good for PRs.

  16. Congrats! Awesome job on the PR and the negative split! Maybe if you get some floral shorts and a minion tank you can get even faster?

    • Thanks so much! Haha, yeah, that’s his signature – short colorful shorts. The minion shirts him and others had made up for Hood to Coast – an artist drew them as minions – so each had a personalized shirt.

  17. Your race recaps are awesome! Congrats on two PRS in one weekend! Super star!! It’s gotta be all the tacos! Great job! πŸ™‚

  18. Congrats on the PR- that’s an awesome time! That place you took the pictures is cool- was it an ad?

    • Thanks so much! Yes, they put a few of those BIG statue thingies around Dallas a year or two ago. It’s a fun little social media thing the did.

  19. missadventuresinrunning

Congrats on meeting all your goals! That is awesome! Congrats to your speedy friends that placed, as well. I also enjoyed the hula hooper.

    • Thanks so much! Yeah, Logan is trying to qualify for the Olympic trials, so he usually wins the races he shows up at.
Ha, the hooper was so random!

  20. Yay for a new PR!!!! Its great to see hard work pay off! That is a pretty freaking cool medal.

  21. Congrats!!! Great photo, too!

  22. Congrats on achieving your goals and another PR! Makes all that training worth it.

  23. Speed demon! Way to go!

  24. CONGRATS!!!!!

  25. Congrats! That hula hoop lady kinda freaks me out… anyone else?

  26. Awesome job!!!! The course sounds sucky though. I didn’t know anyone liked Bobby Brown music. I raced my first tri this weekend… was so awesome and I think I’m actually just now catching on at what I did on Saturday. Now on to marathon training :):):):):)

    • Thank you!!! It was the best course in Dallas, I don’t know why they changed it this year. Hey, if I want to like Bobby Brown music, that’s My Prerogative.
Yes, I was reading about your tri, that is so awesome, congrats! Good luck with marathon prep!!!

  27. Great job, so speedy!

  28. What a great week of running between the 5k and the half! A PR by that much is crazy- congrats!!
Sounds like you paced it perfectly. Must be nice to see your efforts pay off!

  29. Just Awesome, huge congrats!!!!

  30. Uh-May-Zing!!! Congrats!! It’s great how good training pays off, isn’t it? And I routinely walk through water stops. I find the mini-break is what my legs need to keep going, no matter what pace I’m aiming for. Hope you’re still celebrating this week!

    • Thu-an-ks Karla!! Yes, I know you put in the time on the track too, great to see it works! I’m with you on the water stops, I do like the mini break it gives my legs. I also use them as rewards – I’ll tell myself I can take a short walk break…WHEN I get to an aid station.

  31. Wow, amazing PR!! Congrats!!

  32. WOOT WOOT, congrats on the new PR!!!
