Oktoberfest 5k Preview!

I get to race. I get to race. I get to race. I get to race.

My last race was in May, so I’m more than antsy to make some new safety pin holes in my shirt. That’s why I pulled the trigger and signed up for the Addison Oktoberfest 5k.

I’ve run this race probably a dozen times. This is a fun event. You run, then get free German beer. It’s a win-win.

Last year - My friend wore lederhosen during the race, so we decided to celebrate.

That said, I haven’t run this race the past few years. Instead I would wake up early for my long run…and then go to the race and drink free beer cheer for friends.

Some of my friends I cheered for.

Some of my friends I cheered for. I had to blur out some x-rated items they had on the table.

I gotta say, I’m not a huge fan of the new course. Back in the day it was a flat race. But now the course goes over a rather large bridge…TWICE. Yup, you go over the man-made hill and then turn around and do it again.

But at least I know that going into the race, so my plan is to take advantage of the 2nd downhill. I’m going to ride that wave, and use that momentum to carry me to the finish! Or that’s the plan at least.

This race has grown each year, and raised a lot of money for the charity. It has also gotten pretty competitive. Some speedy folks show up for the prize money all the fun.

If you don’t know, the Addison, TX Oktoberfest is one of the biggest in the country. It’s four straight days of beer-soaked, sour-krouted, polka-dotted fun.

Things may get out of hand.

Things may have gotten out of hand.

And if you don’t know, yes, Oktoberfest takes place in September. That is how they do it in Germany. I could explain why here, but instead, I’ll let my buddy Flula explain in THIS VIDEO. (And yes Jason, I do actually know him.)

We will fight you...in a non violent way.

With my 2nd favorite German. We will fight you…in a non violent way.

Ha, ok, if you watched that video, it didn’t explain much, but hopefully it gave you some giggles.

In the end, I hope to have a good time, a good race time, and a approval from this guy…

No, I will not smell your thumb.

My friend here grows a glorious mustache.

Recap coming soon! Prost y’all!

How bout you? Racing this weekend? Celebrating Oktoberfest? Any Oktoberfest race predictions for me?

  1. you’re for sure going to rock this race! horray for free beer!! I love Oktoberfest. I’m dying to know what the x-rated items are on that table. Who brings x-rated items to Oktoberfest?

    • Thank you!!! Free beer tastes the bestest! Hahaha, I was just kidding about the x-rated items. I noticed how the filter I used on the pic really blurred out that area and so I made up a reason why it did. Ha!

  2. WalkToRio

    I didn’t know Flula, I gotta say he’s funny.
I was planning to go to Munich but then I got accidentally poor so I had to postpone my trip.
Racing won’t happing till next week, I’ll race on Friday and then Sunday.
Have a nice weekend and enjoy all the free beer, and the race too.

    • Fula’s a crazy talented dude. Check out his youtube when you get a chance. Bummer about Munich and the accidental poorness…I guess that’s worse than if it was on purpose. Good luck on your races! And thanks!

  3. Good luck and have fun, double hills and all. All the more reason for a second beer. I will be running 20 tomorrow with my athletes. Pretty excited for them. That first 20 miler is always scary/awesome.

    • Thanks so much! Ha, at least two beers 😉 Wow, hope you rocked that 20! I know what you mean. The thought of 20 can be scary…until you think about 26.2, then it doesn’t seem quite as bad….quite…

  4. Yay! Good luck and have a blast with all the festivities!

  5. I love the feeling of getting to race agin after time away! Best of luck! Hope you run sehr gutt!

  6. I was in Germany in September years ago during Octoberfest. I think I mostly drank wine though. I never did do drinking right :-/

    Have a great race!

  7. Good luck, have fun and drink up!

  8. Have fun! My fall racing season has already begun, but the first fall race I had was incredibly hot.

There are a couple German themed races in PA. They give away cuckoo clocks as prizes.

    • Thank you! This was my first fall race, but it was oppressively hot. Hope you and I get fall soon!
That is so cool about that race! I really want a cuckoo clock prize!!!!!!!

  9. Prost! Hope the race was fun. Flula is so funny.

  10. Nice! I’m planning to do a virtual Oktoberfest 10k. I’ll just have to buy my own beer after.

  11. runningschlub

Can’t wait to read the recap

  12. Looks like a super fun race! We ran the Philly Rock and Roll half last weekend and were so tired afterwards we didn’t get our free beer! I know it was a bad idea because we got home and instantly wanted… a beer!!!!

  13. HAHAHA the blurred pics! YES we are actually having an Oktoberfest themed house-warming party next month! Kyle is making his own beer with his friend (they do this all the time now haha), we’ll have sausage, pretzels, and other deliciously-fattening foods.

    • Ha, thanks! Ooooh, enjoy your party! Sounds like fun! I made my own beer before, but it was such a freaking process that I got tired of it. It took like a month to get one case done. Sheesh.
