Will Run 4 Tacos

If you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time, then you know that I have a slight taco obsession.

Bought by a friend.

These ain’t yo mama’s tacos.

I like how they can taste so sinful, but be somewhat healthy* – lots of veggies and lean proteins.

*If you make smart menu choices.

By buddy and I about to fill our pie taco holes.

When I was training for the Dopey Challenge last year, tacos were often my reward for my back to back to back long runs.

A popular place around North Texas to run is called White Rock Lake.  You can get many miles in there.

The start/end was at Winfrey Point. I assume named for Oprah.

9 miles around with plenty of connecting trails to add more mileage.

The best part though, is that around the lake are several taco joints!  Perfect for recovery treat right after a long run.

Mmmmm tacos. That's how you feel better, right there!

Marathon fuel.

Since I have experience with running on tacos, here’s my tips for the taco ordering.

Torchy's is always a good choice.

Hey look, more tacos!

#1 – Avoid flour tortillas.  They ain’t good for you.  The white flour is bad for you.  The trans fats are bad for you.  I always ask for soft corn tortillas – which aren’t necessarily the best thing for you either, but it’s the better option.  Or you could always just eat the innards with a spork…like I’ve been known to do…

#2 – I don’t generally eat meaty things.  I pretty much stick to eggs and fish.  Luckily a lot of places offer breakfast tacos (served all day if you’re extra lucky – just ask).  And if you’re super duper lucky, fish tacos!

Mahi Mahi is goody goody.

#3 – And a lot of these tacos have plenty of veggies involved.  But I always drown mine in salsa regardless – more veggies!

I like my tacos like my women - spicy.

#4 – Enjoy.  It’s a special treat.  It’s a reward.  Savor it.

These poor guys didn't last long.

Veggie on the left – Ahi Tuna on the right.

I apologize in advance for making everyone hungry, as I’m sure I’ll hear about in the comments.  But I couldn’t help it.  I was thinking about this post as I was devouring the tacos in the following photo…

Yesterday's lunch.

These poor guys weren’t long for this world.

Now, I would like to invite anyone reading this to join me for a run followed by tacos.  Just let me know when you’re coming to town!

Who accepts my invitation?  What’s your reward meal?  Who’s hungry now?

-Scott

PS. Looking back on this post, I think Torchy’s and I have a special relationship.  I’m fine with that.

  1. I just finished 3 ground turkey tacos. I need to ditch the flour tortillas though.

    • Yeah, there’s a local joint that makes them fresh right in front of you here. So they’re less evil and I don’t feel as bad about taking a bite or too. I lived on homemade ground turkey tacos in college!

  2. We don’t have a taco place. This makes me sad because I want to try them now!! And unfortunately I’m hungry but its 23:20!

  3. Love tacos! I grew up in San Antonio so I’m a bit of a taco snob…haven’t found any Mexican resteraunts in md yet that I’d rave about. I enjoy getting to look at your tasty taco pics though! 🙂

    • Oh yes, I’m with you. And I cannot imagine the taco torture you have to endure. I remember visiting DC once and we went to a joint where my friend ordered nachos – it was nasty. I swear the salsa was ketchup. Glad you can live vicariously through me! 😉

  4. Did you take all those taco pictures? Who has that many pictures of tacos?!!?! Obviously you do! I fully accept your taco run invitation but only if I can have tacos after and not before our run.

    • Oh yes, Jenna, all me! I’ve had many other meals where I scarfed them down before remembering to take a photo. Oh well. And yes, all of our tacos will be post run, not pre!!!

  5. OMG, I LOOOOVE tacos!! I’m so hungry now!! I think I’m making some tacos for dinner!! YUM!! My reward meal is usually pizza but I will gladly eat tacos!!

    • I love me a good pizza too! But tacos have been so great post run because I’ve got the runger and they are usually super quick to make, so I don’t have to wait long!

  6. Do you have taco sauce in your veins?

  7. So. Incredibly. Jealous! I can only imagine the tasty taco joints you have.
Thankfully my husband makes mean burritos; otherwise I’d be in serious withdrawals!

    • So sorry! I actually was thinking of you when I was writing this. I felt a little bad. A little. 😉
Enjoy your Canadian burritos! Ha, funny story – in my college town in Ohio, they have a famous Burrito Buggy that all the drunk kids go to when the bars let out. I brought a friend from Texas to visit one time and he was dumfounded by the ingredients – he really couldn’t get over the spouts they put in it. Haha

  8. We don’t have good taco places here. I have sads.

  9. I bet Texas tacos are amazing! We have a pretty decent fish taco place that I need to visit ASAP!

  10. I love tacos. So hungry now.

  11. You’re right, you made me hungry 🙂 My go to food after running (or before but not the best idea) is pizza, the best taco place we had closed almost a year ago. 😦

  12. Yay tacos! Usually either pizza or Mexican is my reward food (fajitas or a burrito more often than tacos though) 🙂

    • Go team tacos! Pizza is another good choice! Yes, if we go to a tex-mex joint, I’m getting enchiladas or something, but these taco shops specialize in tacos – quick and easy meal to grab when I’m tired!

  13. {Drool}

I’m really a ‘rito gal. But if I had taco joints like that peppered around my running routes, I would be converted. And 534 pounds.

    • {Wipes your mouth with drool towel}

‘Ritos are aight, but I like the tacos since I can get a variety. BTW, both go well with ‘ritas! Yes, the tacos can be dangerous, but fortunately I’ve managed to keep my weight just under 5 Benjamins.

  14. Oh my goodness, I love tacos. Especially with lots of fresh, homemade quacamole on top. Yum, yum, yum! And corn tortillas are better than flour tortillas anyway!

    • Oh yes! Guac is my FAVORITE! I want to eat all of it! You’re right, I like the flavor much better of corn too!

  15. I love tacos and as soon as I saw this I said to my husband, “You and Piratebobcat need to hang out.” He LOVES tacos. Training around a lake with so many taco places is like running heaven 🙂

    • Haha, well, y’all need to visit and we’ll get all the tacos you and he can handle! Yes, that part of town is awesome. Tons of people workout at the lake, and there are so many choices of places to go after. After one recent run a friend I ran with took us to another taco joint that was so amazing – one had mashed potatoes in it. I ate it before I could get a picture tho!

  16. You know I accept this invitation! I LOVE TACOS. Especially fish tacos. And shrimp on my tacos. Mmmm I am starving.

We have a serious lack of good, legit Mexican food around here. I am jealous of all your tacoptions.

    • Ha, BRING IT! BTW, Torchy’s has a secret menu that we can order from too. Shhhhhh!

Yes, I know what you mean. I’m from the north and all we had was Chi Chi’s growing up. I didn’t know what I was missing. Now, every trip I take, the first thing I do when I get back to Dallas is eat Tex-Mex!!!

  17. I found real tacos in Paris that were delicious! Crisis averted!

  18. Tacos look amazing. If I’m ever in Texas I’m taking you up on that. We have some good taco places here in AZ but nothing near my runs.

    • Bring it on! Tacos all day! Ahh yes, I’ve had some good ones in AZ. I also seem to recall getting the Mexican Hot Dogs in Tucson. Good stuff!

  19. We LOVE tacos and make them at home with Trader Joe’s salmon or tuna burgers quite frequently!

  20. This post has me thinking I need to check out a local restaurant’s taco Tuesday night ASAP!

  21. I have to agree with your love of tacos!!! So Delicious!!!

We have a place here that is AMAZING!!! Lots of healthy options, including a lot of options for anyone that is vegetarian or vegan! I always leave there feeling guilt-free!

and now I want a taco!

    • #Tacos4Life!!!!

Glad to hear you have a good place near by! I see too many sad comments from folks around the globe who don’t have access to tacos. #sosad

      Go get one!

  22. Hungry now? STARVING! I wish I could get some breakfast tacos somewhere.

  23. I nearly ate my computer screen. I had some shrimp tacos this weekend that were pretty good. Fish tacos are my favorite. At home I make tacos with refried beans instead of meat. I’m not a big meat person myself, though I do have my moments.

    • Haha, sorry! I looove fish tacos. And I love bean tacos. I’m with you, I’m not big on meat, but I do enjoy a good bean taco!

  24. LOL I was just thinking, dammit Scott now I want tacos. And then I read your comment about how you will hear this in your comments. I LOVE tacos but I’m rather picky. I like my homemade tacos (made with lean ground turkey breast), chicken tacos (made with chicken breast, I don’t like dark meat), fish tacos, and now I want to try a breakfast taco! I’m in for your run followed by tacos. Must be in that order because the other way around is just asking for trouble.

    • Haha, yeah, I hear it every time! Sounds like you know what you like! I can choose to be not so picky because there are so many great taco joints around here. I can choose pretty safely most of the time. Yes, bring it on! And you are correct, not before – that’s danger right there. Especially because Scotty likes beans.
